Insurance Company Survey

INSURANCE OF GAS POWERED VEHICLES

An autogas insurance survey has been undertaken with the participation of the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

The 20 largest motor insurance companies were invited to take part in the survey, and responses were received from 11 companies, as listed below.

  1. Automobile Association

  2. AXA Insurance UK plc

  3. Co-operative Insurance Society Ltd.,

  4. Cornhill Insurance plc

  5. Fortis Insurance Ltd.,

  6. Groupama Insurance

  7. MMA Insurance

  8. NFU Mutual and Avon Group

  9. Provident Insurance plc

  10. Prudential Assurance Co Ltd.,

  11. Royal & Sun Alliance

Each of the above listed companies advised that they would insure an LP gas powered vehicle with no additional insurance premium providing that it is an OEM-produced vehicle, or a vehicle that has been converted by an LPGA approved installer.

If a vehicle has been converted by a non-approved supplier, or it was a DIY conversion the situation is as follows:

6 companies regard the risk as unacceptable and would not insure the vehicle.

5 companies may insure the vehicle on a case-by-case basis following checks and approval by an independent engineer. If approval is granted a premium price may be involved.

Sobering stuff, and reproduced verbatim, even more reasons to use an LPGA approved company !!
